What is an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT/ACAS)?

The Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) or Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS) is a group of healthcare professionals in Australia responsible for assessing the eligibility of older people for government-funded aged care services. The team consists of doctors, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals who work together to evaluate an individual's health and support needs, and determine the appropriate level of care required.

The ACAT/ACAS assessment process is designed to ensure that older people receive the appropriate level of care and support based on their individual needs. The assessment covers a range of areas, including the individual's medical history, physical and cognitive abilities, and social support needs. It also considers the person's living arrangements and whether they are able to continue living independently, or whether they require support from a residential aged care facility or in-home care services.

Once the assessment is complete, the ACAT/ACAS team provides the individual with recommendations on the level of care and support that would be most appropriate for their needs. This may include access to government-funded aged care services such as home care packages or residential aged care facilities.

The ACAT/ACAS assessment process plays a crucial role in ensuring that older people receive the appropriate level of care and support in Australia. The assessment process is free of charge and can be initiated by the individual, their family, or healthcare professionals.
