RSL Care Fernhill Celebrates Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

on the Friday, June 9, 2017

Over 100 residents at the RSL Care Fernhill retirement community joined together for the annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea earlier this month, raising over 2,300 dollars for cancer research in the Caboolture community.

During the day residents enjoyed a variety of delicious food and were treated to music performances by Bruce Mitchell and Brian Bisset, a local band known as Scotch on the Rocks.

Gwen Hubner, a resident of 21 years at Fernhill retirement village has been hosting the Biggest Morning Tea for several years and each year she is more than happy to organise an event that is close to her heart.

Gwen first moved into the retirement community at 67 years of age as her husband suffered a stroke and needed care – sadly, he passed away only a few months after they both moved to Fernhill.

However, following this Gwen felt she could contribute to the lives of other residents at Fernhill and subsequently became the treasurer of the social group for the next 14 years, as she always enjoyed being a part of the community and getting other residents involved in social activities.

“Having had cancer run in my family and my mother passing away from the disease, I felt that the Biggest Morning Tea is a wonderful cause to raise much needed funds to help to find a cure for cancer,” Gwen said.

“I hope that the money we raise today can really go towards funding research that makes a difference in the community.”

Gwen was pleased once again that residents from both the day therapy centre and retirement village could come together for a great cause and raise valuable funds for cancer research and enjoy a morning socialising together.
