Christmas Appeal’s Incredible Impact Felt Across the Country

on the Thursday, January 19, 2017

The UnitingCare and Target Christmas Appeal has transformed Christmas for thousands of people in need across the country, raising an astounding $1,237,042.

UnitingSA announced that the community’s generosity allowed them to help more than 450 households put food on the table and provide gifts to children to open on Christmas morning.

UnitingSA Chief Executive Officer Libby Craft thanked the community groups, churches, schools, businesses and individuals who donated to the appeal, which marked its special 25th anniversary.

“It is inspiring to see the way the community unites each year to ease the financial burden and brighten the festive season for people who may be struggling,” Ms Craft says

“This appeal has raised more than twice that of last year, which is absolutely incredible.

“Because of this amazing generosity, we have been able to help more people who have turned to us for emergency assistance this Christmas.

“To everyone who supported the campaign, we offer our heartfelt thanks.”

UnitingSA Anti-Poverty Team Leader Cindy Adey sees first-hand the people whose lives are made brighter through the Christmas Appeal.

“We have had so many excited children come through our doors and countless parents who are so grateful they just break down in tears,” Ms Adey says.

“It is a very emotional but wonderful time where we witness the incredible impact of community giving.”

UnitingSA Christmas Appeal Coordinator Clarisse Semler-Hanlon has just finished taking down the Christmas tree and packing up the toy room, which used to contain the 1,965 donated gifts.

“The toys that were once here have gone on to brighten Christmas morning for a child somewhere in Adelaide,” Ms Semler-Hanlon says.

“That makes me smile each time I think about it.

“From all of us at UnitingSA – thank you for your generosity.

“We look forward to uniting again to make a positive difference in people’s lives when the 2017 UnitingCare and Target Christmas Appeal rolls around.”
