Why a Regular Fitness Routine is the Key to Ageing Well
Share this page

Everyone knows that exercise is important, but even more so as we age. A regular fitness routine is vital to ensure we keep our physical and mental health in tip top condition.

The risk of health problems is reduced

Just 30-60 minutes of exercise a day can significantly reduce your risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Keeping up your strength also means you’ll be more likely to remain independent for longer.

Exercise makes us feel good

Extensive research has shown that exercise can reduce the symptoms of depression, most likely due to the endorphins produced while we exercise. If you participate in group exercise, you get to enjoy interacting with others and if you exercise outside, the added bonus of Vitamin D!

Your quality of life will be improved

Exercise is all about making us feel strong, healthy and vibrant. All you need to do is set aside a few hours each week to keep mentally active and stay independent.

There are so many positive benefits that make exercising as we age so worthwhile.

Great types of exercise to try

  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Weights
  • A brisk walk around the park with friends

Be sure to get a physiotherapist or physiologist to recommend some exercises that will suit you best.
