What is Independent Living?

on the Thursday, September 8, 2016

When people think about leaving their family home, they often picture having to move into a residential aged care home (nursing home). Independent living offers a great middle ground, providing accommodation in a secure and private environment, while still allowing you to continue doing all the things you love.

Independent living communities – also known as retirement villages or retirement communities – provide accommodation in independent units, villas and/or apartments. The majority of them cater for residents who are over 55.

Retirement villages don’t offer the same level of care as residential aged care. They’re designed for residents who can take care of themselves, but would still like the social opportunities and activities nearby.

Retirement villages usually offer independent living units for seniors to live in. They often include two or three bedrooms, a living area and kitchen, garage or carport and a small courtyard or garden. Some retirement communities also offer apartments.

Many retirement villages are co-located with a residential aged care home, which means that as your care needs change, it’s easy for you to access a higher level of care.

Some of the benefits of independent living include:

  • No more home and garden maintenance
  • Easy and convenient access to social activities
  • A new community of new friends
  • Increased safety and security
