World War II Runner, 100 and Still Going Strong

on the Friday, April 8, 2016

Distinguished World War II Veteran Lindsay Boyd of RSL Care Moreton Shores has celebrated his 100th Birthday on Tuesday 29 March surrounded by friends and family.

The staff and Residents Committee at Moreton Shores hosted a lovely morning tea in the Village Bay Club. The room was decked out in blue for Lindsay who celebrated this milestone birthday with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lindsay’s daughter Jennifer Boyd was so happy her father had reached this remarkable age.

“Dad is so active, he is always doing something and I think that’s what keeps him going, he and my mother moved into Moreton Shores a few years ago and I think living here added years to her life,” she said.

“Though he is now on his own dad is more active than ever, he is always up and about. The staff take good care of him and he has HomeCare come in four times a week to help him out.

“Roger Hunt is a wonderful Village Manager; if dad ever needs anything he always knows Roger is just a phone call away.”

Lindsay was born in Wycheproof, Victoria on 29 March 1916 and was one of seven brothers.

He served with the National Service 8th Battalion in Victoria in 1942 and was posted to Darwin arriving in Noonamah, on the 12th of February. He was a battalion runner when the first air raids took place on Darwin and was responsible for relaying messages between Australian and American troops.

Lindsay then joined the Australian Imperial Forces in 1943 where he reached the rank of Corporal, and he moved between South Australia and Darwin for the remainder of his service.

On his discharge Lindsay returned to his home town in Victoria, before meeting Joyce and moving to Adelaide to marry her. There he and Joyce owned and operated two delis before they sold them and Lindsay took up a position in a motor vehicle parts manufacturer where he worked in their Stores Dept.

When he retired he and Joyce moved to Brisbane to be near his daughter and her family. Lindsay and Joyce were married for almost 67 years before Joyce passed away last June.

Lindsay now lives our Moreton Shores retirement village and enjoys spending time with his family, playing cards and socialising.
