Five Healthy Holiday Season Snacks

on the Tuesday, December 15, 2015

At this time of year, sweet treats are absolutely everywhere. Shopping for groceries at the supermarket, holiday parties and gifts from friends and family – sugar-filled snacks are almost impossible to avoid.

The average Australian consumes around 27 teaspoons of sugar a day, which is sure to increase for many people over the Christmas/New Year season.

We have compiled a list of naturally sweet foods that will help lessen those sugar cravings:

Pomegranates

These beautiful fruits have been shown to fight heart disease and cancer and their seeds are particularly tasty. They work wonderfully as toppings for yoghurt and summer salads. Pomegranate juice is also sweet but be careful of the added sugars in packaged juices.

Apples

The old saying goes an apple a day keeps the doctor away and this is especially true if the apply is replacing sugary and unhealthy snacks. Apples can be enjoyed in a variety of ways including alone, with a dip such as almond butter or even within salads.

Grapefruits

These delicious citrus fruits are rich in disease fighting nutrients and are wonderful eaten alone, as a juice or as an added flavour enhancer in a variety of summer dishes.

Carrots

A basic staple in many kitchens around Australia, carrots can be eaten raw, tossed in a salad or cooked and served hot with Christmas lunch. They can also be added to bread and muffins and work really well in juices.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are filling and packed with healthy nutrients. They can be eaten alone as a baked potato, cooked with roasted vegetables or added to a quinoa salad.

The Christmas season doesn’t have to be loaded with sugary snacks. We hope you enjoy some of these healthy sweet treats - bon appetit!
