Outstanding Olly is a Champion Senior

on the Friday, October 9, 2015

A lifetime’s dedicated service to seniors, youth and children has seen Western Australia’s premier award for seniors awarded to a humble, hardworking individual.

Congratulating Brother Olly Pickett on receiving the Juniper 2015 WA Seniors Champion Award, Juniper Chief Executive Vaughan Harding said the 74 year old’s outstanding service involving older people was inspirational.

Mr Harding said Br Olly is a driving force behind the Wheelchairs for Kids charity that has made and sent more than 30,000 wheelchairs to children in need in 70 developing countries.

“Olly’s service began early, following his years as a teacher in the State’s North West with the Christian Brothers, he dedicated time to training and motivating young people through his manual arts program in Wangara that led to involvement in Wheelchairs for Kids more than 15 years ago,” he said.

“He works tirelessly as the program’s volunteer workshop manager and is an inspiring leader to a big team of retirees who turn out hundreds of wheelchairs each month.”

Mr Harding said the Juniper 2015 Seniors Champion Award celebrates Br Olly as an outstanding senior and acknowledged his commitment to the Western Australian community.

He said to meet growing demand driven by our ageing population, Juniper was doubling its response to older people and communities across WA with plans for increased quality retirement living, home care and support and aged care services and choice.

As a major sponsor of the WA Seniors Awards, Juniper proudly supports the spirit of the initiative — now in its 30th year — and congratulated all finalists and award winners at a ceremony held at Crown Perth on 1 October, International Day of Older Persons.

The awards’ judges noted Br Olly’s key role in enabling and promoting the positive impact that seniors have in the community as well as the significant support provided to disadvantaged children.

The WA Seniors Awards 2015 are a partnership between the Department of Local Government and Communities and Council on the Ageing WA.
