Many foods contain naturally occurring substances that help you relax and get a good night’s sleep. We’ve compiled a list of seven of the best choices:
Almonds
Just a handful of almonds will have you feeling sleepy in no time. Almonds contain a type of tryptophan and magnesium, both of which are known to help naturally reduce muscle and nerve function while also steadying your heart rate.
Honey
Honey contains glucose which lets your brain know when to shut off orexin – the chemical known to trigger alertness. However, you have to be careful not to overdo it. One tablespoon for a good night’s sleep is plenty.
Whole-Grain Bread
Carbs are both good and bad for you. Carbs such as lollies and soft drink are great if you need a quick burst of energy because they are quickly digested. Carbs found in whole-grain bread will spike blood glucose levels and once the glucose level drops back down will see your energy drop too.
Cherries
One of the best ways you be sure of a good night’s sleep is to increase your melatonin intake. Cherries as well as nuts and oats are a natural source of melatonin and can help to regulate your sleep cycle when eaten often.
Herbal Teas
Tea has an abundance of sleep promoting properties. The best ones to help you get a good sleep include chamomile, passionflower hops and lemon balm.
Dark Chocolate
Yes, you read that right! Dark chocolate contains serotonin which relaxes your body and mind.
Bananas
Bananas contain both magnesium and potassium which act as muscle relaxants. The vitamin B6 also found in the fruit converts tryptophan into serotonin, increasing relaxation even more.
