Nowadays, it’s not just about living longer, it’s about living healthily and happily for longer. See our top tips to help you age well.
Exercise your body
Exercising moderately for just 30 minutes three times a week can not only assist in improving your blood flow, but is also associated with a significantly reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Exercise your brain
As we age, several of our mental skills slow down so keeping mentally active is critical to keeping your mind sharp. Cross-training is important too – start up a new hobby, listen to a different type of music or take a course in something you’ve never studied before.
Eat Well
An addition to getting enough physical exercise, eating well is also important to ageing well. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, check food labels for salt content (too much can increase your blood pressure) and watch out for saturated fats – too much can raise cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Relationships Count
Studies have shown that our relationships with others have an impact on ageing well – it is important to maintain and cultivate our relationships, especially with younger generations.
Be Creative
For many of us, we get more creative as we get older. Some of the greatest artists in history have been in their 80s and 90s. It is never too late to take up writing, painting, drawing or other creative pursuits.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Contrary to what many people think, as we age we tend to become more accepting and positive. Studies have shown that stress and worry hit a low point, and well-being hits a high point by the time most people turn 85.
