The residents of RSL Care Westhaven Social Committee are working with the Pozieres Remembrance Association to build a memorial at the Pozieres site in France where thousands of Australian Soldiers lost their lives in WWI.
The memorial will include an honour roll listing the names of all of the Australian Soldiers who are known to have died in and around Pozieres, a large number of whom have no known grave.
The Westhaven Social Committee has purchased four bricks for the site at to contribute to the building of the memorial. The bricks will be endorsed and engraved with RSL Care Westhaven Retirement Village Toowoomba Queensland Australia.
Retirement Village Manager, Vanessa Nugent says her residents enjoy participating in charitable and community focused activities.
“The residents of Westhaven have an active interest in history, especially Australian wartime history. Many of them are Veterans themselves or have family members who have served our country,” she said.
“They are so excited at the opportunity to play a part in commemorating this event in time.”
The Pozieres Remembrance Association was established in 2006 to remember the terrible casualties and losses at Pozières. The commemorations are held on 23 July each year to mark the beginning of what has become known as the Battle of Pozieres Ridge.
The Australian War Memorial records show the casualties as being in the vicinity of 23,000 men over a six week period from 23 July to 9 September 1916.
The Association has been campaigning for funding that would enable the Village of Pozières to continue with commemorations on an annual basis and in 2010 expanded its goals to include the building of a Pozières Memorial Park.
With the 100th anniversary commemorations fast approaching in July 2016, all efforts are now being made to ensure these commemorations are appropriately scaled to mark this significant occasion.
The residents of Westhaven are looking forward to seeing the Memorial Park completed and their donation making a difference on the other side of the world.
