on the Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Finding the right retirement village for you is a process than can take weeks, months or even years. Timing in this search is so important. If you start looking too soon, you may end up with a house, apartment or unit you’re not quite ready for. But if you leave it too late, you may not be able to find a spot in the retirement villages you love.

When searching for a retirement village, it’s important to understand what you want out of your retirement.

The first thing many people take into consideration is the location. Do you want to stay living near your current suburb or move away to have a complete lifestyle change? Something to keep in mind is that it can be cheaper to retire locally. Retiring close to where you currently live can save on moving costs and travel expenses etc.

Handy tip: take at least a month to research a variety of areas and different neighbourhoods to get a better idea of which ones suit your wants and needs.

Once you have found the perfect retirement village, it’s time to sort out your finances. Preparing and selling your family home or taking out a bank loan can sometimes take longer than expected so it is best to be prepared well in advance.

Applying for and getting approved for a unit or an apartment in a retirement village can also take a while. If you have found our dream retirement village but there are no vacancies available, you may need to be placed on a waiting list for a few weeks or months. If have a couple of retirement village options in mind, you will more likely be able to move in a lot sooner.
