IRT Welcomes JRPP Approval of Kanahooka Seniors Housing Development

on the Tuesday, May 24, 2016

IRT welcomes the decision of the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) to approve their newest seniors housing development at Kanahooka.

The community of 100 self contained homes, resident recreational facilities and parking for 119 cars will be located on land adjacent to IRT William Beach Gardens.

IRT Group Chief Strategy Officer Stig Andersen said: "The number of people living in the Illawarra who are over the age of 65 is forecast to increase by 30 percent by 2026.

"We will need more affordable, age-appropriate housing to cater for this growing ageing population.
"IRT's new community at Kanahooka will do just that, offering high-quality, custom-designed single-storey living at affordable prices," he said.

With its proximity to Lake Illawarra, the development will have a coastal feel. Communal open spaces with a pavilion in each of the site's five precincts will provide space for residents to gettogether and enjoy social activities.

Each street of six to eight dwellings will culminate with a community garden that can be used by residents for growing vegetables.

"We've also designed the Community to ensure the freshwater wetland at the northern end of the site is protected," Mr Andersen said.

Given the site's capital investment value of over $20 million, the development required approval by the JRPP. The panel agreed with Wollongong City Council's recommendations and conditions for the $35 million development.

It is expected that construction will begin in the second half of 2016, delivering a much needed boost to the Illawarra construction industry.
