Making the Move into a Retirement Village

on the Wednesday, March 2, 2016

Leaving behind the family home and moving into a retirement village is a big change which can be hard and stressful for many people. If you have decided to make the move into a retirement village, we’ve come up with some helpful tips and hints to assist you with the process.

Make lists

One of the first things to do, is to make a list. It sounds simple enough, but being organised and sorting your thoughts out on paper can be a huge help and create less stress. You’ll know you’re making progress when you can start ticking items off the list!

Packing

Before you start packing, it’s important to decide what you’re going to keep and what you’re going to sell, donate to charity or throw away. It’s a great idea to have a floorplan of your new home on-hand so that you can make sure everything will fit on moving day.

When it comes to packing the items you’re taking with you it’s important to remember lots of boxes, clear labelling and plenty of wrapping for breakable items. Having clear labelling on each box will make it so much easier when you’re in your new home and trying to find the cutlery! Also try packing by room – it will save you tonnes of time when it comes to unpacking.

Change of Address

You’ll need to remember to let a lot of people know what your new address is. Some include:

  • Friends
  • Family
  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Telephone
  • Internet
  • Bank
  • Lawyer
  • Sports club
  • Electoral roll
  • Car registration
  • Magazine subscriptions
  • Mechanic
  • Accountant
  • Medicare
  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Insurance

Just in case you forget anyone, Australia Post can redirect your mail to your new address for a specified amount of time.

Pets

If you have a pet you are taking with you, it’s important to take their wellbeing into consideration. They will be able to sense what’s going on and may start to stress. You could have a friend look after them for a few days or take them to a kennel or cattery.

Make Time for Rest

Make sure you’re as organised as possible. Have your belongings packed up well in advance to avoid still packing at 1am the night before your move. The last thing you need is to be tired on moving day. It’s a good idea to move all the heavy items first to avoid having to negotiate your way around a pile of moving boxes at the other end.
